Urban Wilderness Works™; a non-profit based in Seattle, Washington, "works to restore and encourage communities by providing culturally and environmentally based service-learning projects rooted in social change." The Wilderness Works™ program works to create a safe, fun, and memorable team experience for urban youth experiencing the great outdoors, some for the first time! We provide leadership training for youth interns 18-24 years old of African, Asian, Latino and Native descent who have an interest in the outdoors, careers on public lands, and the arts. Currently hiring for immediate openings for summer wilderness trip co-leaders with a current WFR or WFA certification.
As an adult trip co-leader you would be responsible for: Daily planning and logistics while on course; adhering to risk management protocols; youth development; youth supervision; recreational planning; working with land management agencies and partners to meet trail building and environmental restoration standards; sharing in daily camp duties, included but not limited to, cooking, camp clean-up, and gathering water.
17-day course description:
Program starts with the mandatory pre-trip days August 22 and 23 for staff and youth interns. We pack all gear with interns before the trip on August 23. Then we head to the North Cascades National Park, WA on Ross Lake on August 25th. Twelve days of trail restoration work may include replacing rotten gadbury structures with mini puncheon bridges right near the junction of the Big Beaver Trail and the West Bank Trail. They group will be hauling logs and splitting cedar for the bridge decking. The team will work for 12 days and then participate in leadership activities for the last 5 days. The program features the arts as a reflection tool and will encourage youth to engage their creativity through writing, drawing, spoken word, and journaling. You must be available Thursday August 4 thru Sunday August 7, 2016 for staff training at Barclay Lake and August 22 and 23 for pre-trip (in-city) activities with the participants. The 17-day wilderness trip leaves August 25 and returns September 10.
